Rear Derailleur Terminology

So I'm looking to get a rear derailleur for the Kona. What does the long cage or medium cage do? What is that?

It's referring the length of the derailleur. I believe that if you're running a 3x system with a typical 9-11 cogs in the back that you need a long cage. Generally a 2x uses a medium and a 3x uses a long cage.

The cage length refers to the length of the arm between the two pulleys on the rear derailleur. Ideally, you should go with the shortest possible cage length to minimize chain slap and noise, and to make your shifting a little bit crisper. However, if you have a standard 3 chainrings on the front, you should probably stick with the long cage. The longer cages allows for the larger combinations of gears possible with the triple chainring setup.
