Quick and dirty ascending with an ATC-- Guide or plain/XP
Not much info on the 'net about this for the plain/XP ATC. Here are some photos I took the other day while messing around. If you ever find yourself with very minimal gear and the need to ascend, all three ATC's can be rigged in progress capture mode to enable ascending by arm with a simple rope grab above. The Guide can do this double line obviously too.
Not sure of the load rating of using one of the ATC's slots. Anyone?

Hmmm. I don't think the ATC and/or ATC/XP can be used that way (they aren't progress capture devices....the ATC Guide is like a plaquette and weill capture progress if used correctly), and, it looks like you've got the ATC Guide rigged...well...strangely. Or, incorrectly.
Here's kind of a way to do it:

Pretty clunky way to ascend. I'd probably opt for Prusiks...

It works just fine, but more directly it's just the normal and designed-for guide mode rigged in a different orientation. Nor different from the ATS' ascension mode. It's all the same.

I would suggest locking the carabiners!

Clean and dry conditions, with new-ish supple rope (Sterling, pictured?) I imagine it could be this way.
Wet and sandy with a well-worn, stiff rope?
Let's see the comparison video !
In any case, might beat hanging around on the bottom of something if you have no other options. At the very least, the struggle to ascend would warm you up.
Interesting that progress capture might work with a non-guide ATC...
Thanks for posting up. Now, how about that video?
