    St George Trip

Today we hit Bear Claw Poppy via Bloomington micro loop and Snake Pit. Then we hit the JEM Trail.

We've got a few more days of riding before we head back.

We got back Monday night, no crashes so we consider the whole trip a success

Here's just a clip of the Middle Finger. Once you do it enough, it's like nothing big and I almost feel dumb filming it because I've got so much footage, but I wanted to include the guy at the end who wiped out.

Then I come to find out I've been borrowing a $6000 29er this whole weekend, made me start thinking twice before I tried some of the technical rocky stuff

So we rode Bear Claw Poppy / Bloomington Microloop / Snake Pit, and then we headed over to JEM, took a day for hiking and playing around Pioneer Park and Snow Canyon, and then Monday morning we hit a quick ride at Turtle Wall and Paradise Rim.

Another successful trip down south. Awesome! When I am down there, I have a hard time coming back.

I am interested in your trail choices. I recently got some good input on Guacamole, which is a trail that I know you are familiar with but I see that you did not bike it this time. Did you choose these for variety or are these your favorite/recommended trails? I am heading down for a trip in a couple of weeks and am trying to pick a few.

    Thanks

I've only been on Guacamole once about 6 years ago or so, but I liked it. The terrain was similar to Gooseberry Mesa. I wouldn't mind hitting it again, but some of these trips are rushed so we don't have too much time to plan it out, and I honestly didn't know if there were any access issues going on with Guacamole at the time.

I would like to do it again to get familiar with it.

Most of the time we go ride 3 or 4 of our "safe trails", trails we know that we like and we don't want to waste time riding a new trail that might suck. If we have more time down there, or are there more often, we might be able to explore a few more trails.

How much time will you have to ride, and what type of terrain are you looking for?

Guacamole is incredibly fun. Beech had it right that it is somewhat similar to riding Gooseberry or Little Creek, but is has it's own unique flavor for sure. I rode it for the first time this past fall and was blown away. The main lollipop loop is easy to follow, but the best stuff is a little bit off the radar. Everything is on skidmap.com but the extra southern loops would be difficult to find if you didn't have a GPS or ride with somebody familiar with the area. Anyway, I highly recommend this ride.

Access is super easy as long as the road in isn't wet. The last hill is steep and exposed and is apparently downright scary if it is muddy (think, car slips off the road into a deep ravine kind of scary).

Thanks both of you @neilether and @Sombeech. Beech, just one day biking and one day rock climbing so we will only hit a few trails and like you said....with such short time I want to pick them carefully which is why I asked. Last time I got some much appreciated beta from @Deathcricket on both topics and we had a great time so I am trying to follow that up with another successful St G trip and it is always nice to go with suggested routes. Thanks again.

I couldn't quite tell from your post, have you ridden any trails down there yet or will this be your first trip with a bike?

Barrel roll, sidewinder, Jem, Church rocks, and something with Grape in the name. One other but the name escapes me completely. This is a pic from that one and it has a rock formation that you will likely recognize. It doesn't really matter I guess I think you can see what I rode by the list and the bottom line is that I am too out of shape for any high end stuff. Not to mention lack of skill. My boys would love it, but I would have to wind the clock back a decade or two or else hit the exercise bike some more.

Looks really fun! You guys were in shorts and tee-shirts. Was it really that warm down there? I'm jealous!

Hmmm, I don't recognize the rocks but I'd assume it's right along I-15 near the Church Rocks, Prospector, Leeds area? Or is it closer to Santa Clara and Snow Canyon?

yes, near church rocks. Not a big one.

I think we will try Guacamole based on the previously mentioned input from my friend. I was just trying to see if those you listed were favorites or just some new ones you were giving a shot as I decide on a couple of others. Your pics/vids look like there were good rides.

I have ridden the Gaucamole trail 3 times in the 20 years of mountain biking that I have done throughout the state. The reason for so few times is because when I head to Southern Utah I prefer to bike ride more than spending time driving to a distant trail head for 1 trail. My opinion is that there are more and better options with Gooseberry Mesa and simply staying close to St. George. I am amazed at the progress that has been made with mountain biking opportunities during the last 10 years. I used to just drive straight to Gooseberry for the day. If you were planning on entering Zion Park or riding Gooseberry also, then I would ride the Gaucamole trail.
