A Journey Through Purgatorio - A Dante Canyon

Trip Report - Purgatory, Dante Canyons- October 18, 2013

We began our ascension out of the under gloom, to the Mountain of Purgatory on the far side of the world”- (DanteAlighieri, circ. 1310 AD. The Divine Comedy). When you are in Purgatory you have Hope, Good Hope. It is not for eternity; you will get out and move on. There was a time many years ago when I was sworn to secrecy; I couldn’t reveal the nature, the location or the very existence of the Dante Canyons. At the time it was like being in Inferno, in fact it was the canyon Inferno that I and others were escorted thru. Not being a LateRepentant nor desiring Excommunication, I held true tothat conviction as did my other canyoneers-in-arms. But, as with all future events, times change. Once the location was revealed to the world by the sinful masses, my ascension from the under gloom of Inferno to the hope of Purgatory was transfixed - I COULD NOW DO A DANTE TRIP REPORT!!! Woo!! Woo!!. Belay me to seventh Paradiso!!

Seriously though, I take Pride to exclaim that Purgatory is a wonderfully beautiful and Terraced canyon - not too hard, more fun than anything else. I Envy those who first descended it and I understand their Wrath of those who tried to expose it. We were not Slothful with our anchor building or rope pulling, a philosophy that I hope will continue in this wonderful place. With Covetous abandon we poured over our Beta to be sure of the tortuous exit route climb and we took care not to be Gluttonous in our over indulgence of Sour Jolly Ranchers (my favorite canyon candy) and not leave wrappers strewn about. I have yet to come up with a nice way to use the word “Lustful” in a Trip Report. We did not use the Ante-Purgatory exit but used instead the original exit…with some webbing of course..

Thanks to my Canyon Partners: Kari,Forrest, Matt C., Monica, Matt M. who accompanied me on this journeyas we passed thru Purgatorio and made it fun.

Thanks to Matt M. and Monica for some great Pictures

Awesome! We really wanted to hit all four Dantes when we visited, but Paradiso and Inferno ended up taking most of a day each. Love the report!

Well....the road to Inferno is paved with good intentions Sorry, couldn't resist that one.

The roads are in good shape. There are a few sections that require High Clearance but all is dry.

    Thanks for the comments.

FWIW: There are now 5 Dantes as I added the Devil's Thumb in June.
