Zion-area canyons? (Besides Birch!)
Spending Labor Day down near Zion with 6 or 8 friends. Most of them have done a couple canyons but they're still beginners. I'd like to take them on a half-day canyon somewhere in the area (but outside of the Park). We're staying clear of Birch; I'm sure that place will be a mess of massive groups of beginners on Labor Day. The only canyon I can really find in the area is Red Hollow but it looks like there isn't much past the initial 300 footer. Anything worth doing down there or should we just go eat pie in Veyo?

I still think Red Cave is very underrated...

And I consider Kanarra Creek to be one of the prettiest slot canyons on the planet...

Both are outside the park and neither require a permit.

I still think Red Cave is WAY over-rated.
Keyhole? Lower Fridge? with good vehicles Rock Canyon? Yankee Doodle? Boltergeist? Kanarra Creek? Walker Gulch?
Yeah, Red Hollow is not much more than one big big rap. Also, in the fall the landowner locks the gates to keep the deer poachers out.

Utah is a very special and unique place. There is no where else like it on earth. Please take care of it and keep the remaining wild areas in pristine condition. The world will be a better place if you do.

Any married man can tell you that's a true statement....
I find it amusing the number of people that are surprised to discover Tom and I are actually friends outside of our internet lives. We both enjoy canyoneering, but we do have a very different value system which creates a wide range of opinions.

Anyway, back on topic, I thought that Red Hollow was plenty fun after the first rappel, there was some good stuff in there. And, if you're looking for something that will be fairly Birch Hollow-esque, to some degree, Walker Gulch is a pretty good option.

I just did Water Canyon in Hidale and it was a lot of fun. Might be kind of a long day with 8 people if you do the whole canyon, but there's a few areas to drop in early. We also did Rock Canyon which was fun & short, but kind of a pain to get to.

Just had a nice jaunt in Yankee Doodle this weekend. It was full of water which made it more of a hoot. Only two raps (and one can be avoided, or done twice if you want to climb out and run back like my son did!).

Walker is a good one, but there's one rappel that is a bit exposed off a tree, so you would want to set up something easier for the noobies and then rerig for the last person.
