    Looking for rappelling info

What I want to do is be able to go on hike or exploring in various areas in California, mostly on the coast in the redwoods, and be able to anchor off to a tree and go down inclines I couldn't really do on foot. Sometimes go on a straight high angle vertical drop for fun.

I am thinking of buying this kit. (Wont let me post link...)
only replacing the harness with this ( no links allowed....) with the chest piece attachment so it's NFPA approved for work too. Either that or just by a Yates full body padded for work and a tactical belt for personal use.

Any suggestions? Where can I find some good info on what i'm after, like how to set up for rope retrieval, biner blocks, double rope and so on... Never done it before, and was excited to see I might not have to leave my rope in one spot until I return.

Here is the kit I want to buy http://www.attackopgear.com/product/ORS200.html

and swap out the harness with this http://www.attackopgear.com/product/Y320.html

along with the chest piece attachment so I can use it as an NFPA class III harness for work.

Welcome to Bogley Randy! Interesting question.

I don't think very many folks around here would carry forest service gear around, just to explore. Very expensive and too heavy. @Bootboy would probably have some good insight on a harness setup that would meet all of your needs. If he doesn't see this thread, consider sending him a message.

Just a quick observation, but that "belt" harness is expensive for what you want to do.....check out Canyoneering USA store for some other options.

Not sure the weight of the rope you're looking at buying, but that's always a consideration when you have to pack it on your back.

Yeah that setup is pretty uber. Looks like a tactical very high quality setup for pro's and military who prob use it every day. you strike me as a weekend warrior type who would probably do this once a month. i would get a used backpack, or something from walmart, or maybe you already have a backpack because you hike?

    $20
Pirana Descender sorry i cant find one with the biner in it. but add another $15 for that http://www.ebay.com/itm/PETZL-PIRANA...item5af222e593
    $50
    Black diamond harness http://www.sierratradingpost.com/bla...processed=true
    $60
And whatever rope you like, here is one for $150

So that puts you at under $300 vs $500. And again, I'm sure you could find this all on one site, I just popped the first links that popped up. You could even stop by an overpriced REI and stay way under this price. Don't get me wrong though the link you posted is a solid setup, way overkill, but nice.
Your safety is not my responsibility.

Well I need a full body NFPA harness for work regardless. So i'm trying to decide between these two, any suggestions?

I like that the second one can be converted to a class II, but it's still bulky and not something I would just wear around hiking. Looks like i'll have to buy the tac belt down the line if I really want it so bad.

I stretched out our 200' rope at work, folded it in half and it looked like a little much for now. But then I folded it in half and doubled it up, and a 50' rap seemed a tad short. I don't know. Maybe 100' to start is good for short raps playing around, especially since packing around 200' weighs a bit much to stack on top of normal gear.

So I went to REI. I got everything but a harness and figure 8. I was happy they had one rope on clearance that fit my needs. 7/16, 150' (right in the middle between what I felt was too long and too short) Blue Water.
Also got 30' of 1" tubular webbing with a strength of 18kN
2 Black Diamond locking screw gate carabiners at 7kN
and 30' of 7mm polyester accessory cord (9.8kN) for tying prusik loops

Anyone see anything wrong with this, or a piece of gear that isn't up to par?
