Karl Malone announced as a coach for the Jazz

    Some old classics from Malone...

SALT LAKE CITY — With Jeff Hornacek moving on to Phoenix there was a new spot opening up on Tyrone Corbin's staff. That new spot has been opened up for Karl Malone as a new position coach.

The legendary "Mailman" will have a chance to start working with the big men — Derrick Favors and Enes Kanter in particular. The announcement came Wednesday afternoon on 1280 TheZone. Both Greg Miller and Malone made the announcement.

Malone won't be a full-time coach, just a positional coach that works specifically with the big men. This means he probably won't sit on the bench with Corbin during games.

"It's not the kind of a deal where Karl's going to be wearing a tie and sitting on the bench at all of our games," Miller said on KSL Newsradio.

This position could be very similar to how Hornacek started his coaching career. He started working as a shooting coach and was later moved up to assistant.

Malone has talked about his desire for coaching in the past. Over the last year or two a rift between the Millers and Malone came to a head when Malone said he couldn't get tickets to a game. Greg Miller wrote a blog post about their past. Apparently the feud has lead to the announcement.

"It is great to have Karl as a resource for the team," Corbin said. "He is one of the most talented big men to have ever played this game."

He has already worked with Favors once and is waiting for Kanter to finish recovering from his dislocated shoulder. One of the big areas that Malone has talked about bringing to Favors and Kanter is the small things that he learned over time.

"In our last conversation before he had his first workout with Derrick Favors, Karl told me of his philosophy when he was playing," Miller said. "He said after he got a defensive rebound it wasn't just his goal to beat his opponent to the offensive basket. But he wanted to give [John] Stockton the outlet pass and beat Stockton to the other end of the floor. It's that kind of insight that is going to add so much value."

Malone played for the Jazz from 1985-2003. He and Stockton helped the Jazz reach two NBA Finals. His Hall of Fame career saw him as the second all-time leading scorer at his retirement. He averaged 25 points per game and grabbed 10.1 rebounds per.
He won the MVP twice and was an All-Star 14 times.
