Natural Bridges Natl Mon/Cedar Mesa hikes April 19-23, 2013

If you haven't heard of these quieter places in Southern Utah then I can not recommend them enough. If you think ancient cultures might interest you, then hiking among the places of the "Old Ones" (Ancestral Puebloans) is precious.
I met up with my special anasazi ruin roaming friends in Natural Bridges National Monument campground and off we went! Here's a selection of lesser travelled walks we did.

April 19: Natural Bridges National Monument

I arrived with enough time to do a short exploration of Armstrong and Tuwa Canyons from the Owochomo Bridge trail.

    April 20: Lime Canyon Rim

Lime is on Cedar Mesa and a wilderness study area. Beautiful terraced Cedar Mesa sandstone with no real maintained trails. A big group of us did some exploration of the area. Afterwards we poked around the mesa tops for potsherds.

April 21: Natural Bridges National Monument

Today the cadre and I headed back to Armstrong Canyon for a trailless hike-through.

April 22: South Fork Owl Canyon Rim

I have been blessed to be getting to know fellow desert travellers Kathy and Larry from Missouri. Moving through a wild landscape with some special friends is always precious. I owe them much gratitude for welcoming me into their lives. Today we roamed along the rim of Owl together.

April 23: The infamous Comb Ridge

Kathy and Larry took me to the "Comb" for my first time! We ascended an unnamed draw that cut the comb deep until we ran out of comb to climb and enjoyed a view the "ancients" must have enjoyed nearly 1000 years ago. This has been a cold Spring here and today was our first day at a low enough altitude to get a flower show!

Next stop: a Canyonlands national Park, Needles backpack

I want to give a special thanks to Kathy and Larry, along with Ray, Nancy, Horst, Inga, Jeanette, and Peter for adopting me into the tribe of anasazi ruin roamers (for lack of a better way to describe the group who descends upon Bridges campground each spring and fall)!
