So we need camp chairs, cutting boards, towels, spices, radios, et al, but only one quart of water?
Utah is a very special and unique place. There is no where else like it on earth. Please take care of it and keep the remaining wild areas in pristine condition. The world will be a better place if you do.

Too much crap...I carried most of that stuff on my very first extended backpack and a majority of it was absent on my second. Being able to make a fire and having extra calories to eat are really the most important essentials to carry, in my opinion.
The end of the world for some...
The foundation of paradise for others.

How do you know when you are taking too much stuff backpacking? When you need a list.

I can understand some people might want to write up a list. Certainly one person's list won't fit another person.

I keep my stuff in bins that are labeled, such as Water, Stoves, Rope, Fuel, etc. Depending on where I'm going I just start grabbing stuff from the bins. If I'm going with 2 or 3 other people that I know, I may not need a water purifier. If it's an over night pack, I might not need a stove. If there are bugs, I might need a tent. It just depends.
