Thread: Engelstead conditions this fall?

    Engelstead conditions this fall?

We are heading for Engelstead this Sat (if the road has not been rained out) and wondering how cold the canyon is likely to be? Does a deep canyon like this act like a refrigerator? Wondering if the night time lows at the drop in are in the 30-40's will it be even colder in the slot? We are noob canyoneers/experienced climbers who have been loving the Zion moderates this summer and wondering when we are going to get our asses frozen off? When does ice start to form? Thanks!

I don't think there would be ice in there, but yes, the slots are colder during the day. They usually don't get as cold as night, but the weather forecast says mid-20's for Englestead, so yes, it will be chilly in the slot, especially if you are wet.

Utah is a very special and unique place. There is no where else like it on earth. Please take care of it and keep the remaining wild areas in pristine condition. The world will be a better place if you do.

I have also seen snow still in there when we went in late June. If you pause my video at 46 seconds you can see it.

23 degrees at 7 am, nearby at similar altitude. So, yes, it will be really chilly in there. Not much sunlight this time of year.

Out Orderville? I'd carry wetsuits. Those pools gonna be COLD!!!

There will almost certainly be some ice. There was hoar frost in Birch Hollow on Monday. Englestead is much deeper and colder. Bring wetsuits, move fast.

I was in there a week ago with a party of 5, and Englestead was referigerator like at the bottom. Bring some extra warm layers, and definately cold water gear if you plan to continue down orderville. The fall colors were amazing in orderville, best scenery of our trip!
