October Road Trip - Canyon #1 - North Fork of Robber's Roost

Well, another off-season has hit the Colorado high country and that can only mean one thing.... Desert Roadtrip!

This time around I took off for a week (Oct. 9th-16th) with some of my friends/co-workers. In all we did 4 canyons, going from the Roost to the Swell to Zion. The canyons just got better the further along in the trip we were!

So, without further ado, the first installment - North Fork of Robber's Roost

(No-Helmet Warning. This was a personal choice.)

Did this canyon over the weekend, excellent time and a great adventure all the way out the end. Unfortunately this canyon appears to be bolted into oblivion. I have not seen any other canyons in the area with this many bolts, all avoidable with natural anchors as well. Someone needs to take a hacksaw along sometime soon...

Agree. Bolts have their place, but not everywhere IMO. It is discouraging to have things just "setup" for you when you arrive. However, I know this has been hotly debated, and will continue to be debated. There are many people who will insist on a bolt at every drop. And thus some of us will simply bypass those anchors that are deemed "not needed" and just go down...

Thanks for the great report!! Another canyon that I haven't done yet...

A year ago there were only bolts at two drops... are there more now? The first mandatory rap in the actual canyon was going over a large chockstone and the anchor was a cairn. Did someone bolt that one? If so I would love to do the canyon again and yank some of them.

Our group did this canyon on Saturday. Were you the group I talked to on Friday coming out? Or the group I talked to on Sunday morning, when we were leaving? Fun time. I especially liked the climb out.

No additional bolts seen by me. The first two rappels are from rock anchors, the last two rappels are bolted. Definitely unnecessary, but I won't call this canyon bolted to oblivion.

    Nice TR!

The pics are fantastic, I especially like the one of the sky framed by canyon walls.
