SALT LAKE CITY — Utah’s history is interwoven with the fickle mining industry, so it’s no wonder that the state boasts a large number of ghost towns.

Some of these towns have experienced stunning boom-bust cycles, going from crowded streets and thousands of residents to near oblivion in one generation. Others have clung to their abandoned structures, which stubbornly endure harsh winters, roving vandals and neighboring wildfires. And the final variety is the partial ghosts, which still claim a loyal handful of residents despite the deteriorating condition of the towns.

This photo gallery features ghost towns throughout Utah. Some are well-known and appear on maps, while others required extensive searching to locate. Some are on public land and others required special permission from private landowners. All of them share beautiful and haunting echoes from the past.

I've been to a few of them, I find them all pretty interesting. Here's a good book, somewhat out of date but some good reading:

X2. This book got me out to the Newfoundland range. Not my post but here is an old Bogley post about that range
