Hike to Flowing Lava on the Big Island of Hawaii
Kīlauea in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park has been erupting constantly since 1983. While it's not always possible to see lava flowing on the surface, Kīlauea is still the most user-friendly active volcano on earth. The chemical character of the lava often allows a hiker to just walk up to it safely. These photos are from May of 2012, when the hike to flowing lava was about 15 miles round-trip. Other times, it flows near to existing roads, allowing you to just drive up and gawk.

I've hiked out the the lava many, many times. It's just too much fun. Hopefully It'll get flowing off the pali again soon. It's been a couple years since I've been able to poke a stick in it. Too damn hot for a shirt...like, 2000 degrees!

When we were in Hawaii, the NPS had roped off the lava so you couldn't get close to it.
Apparently not long before our visit some tourist got burned roasting marshmallows on it, so the NPS wouldn't let anyone get close.Utah is a very special and unique place. There is no where else like it on earth. Please take care of it and keep the remaining wild areas in pristine condition. The world will be a better place if you do.

We didn't get close to it either. Watched the smoke and the glow coming off the Pali but either way it was eerie cool being their.
