Picking a canyon in the roost

I'm headed down to RR this weekend and I've got my eye on a few canyons, but I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions on "the best" canyon down there. I've already done Larry and Not MB. I'd rate myself as an intermediate canyoneer and any suggestions made will of course be researched further to make sure they are suitable for me and my group.

If you're interested in really pretty stuff, but not overly technical, I'd suggest High Spur. It's awesome, and that last (and only, when I went through) rap is pretty cool, too.

Or Red Spur, which is a lot like High Spur with hot sauce.

I have been to the Roost for canyoneering in summer, but most of the time it's not that pleasant. Maybe with the rain there will be more water around though.

Cresent Creek is in the greater Roost and is always pleasant in summer. Lower Maidenwater usually is too, but it's easy (but beautiful).

In the main part of the Roost, Alcatraz and Larry (I haven't done the Spurs) are my favorites. You've already done Larry, so Alcatraz would be #1 on my list, but that depends on what you mean by "intermediate canyoneer".
Utah is a very special and unique place. There is no where else like it on earth. Please take care of it and keep the remaining wild areas in pristine condition. The world will be a better place if you do.

    +1!

However, it is kinda short, being a half-day canyon.

Chambers is another very good, half-day canyon, but it is quite a bit more difficult.

Summer not the best for RR. The Bluejohn East/Main loop is good, but would be brutal if it is hot out.

    For me, Summer = Zion.

Thanks for all the suggestions and yeah I agree that zion is the best place for the middle of summer, but the guy I'm going with was headed down the other direction for a week and so I suggested the roost. I'm gonna hit up Zion next week.

As for red spur I was looking at doing that one, but it says there are some potholes and atm our group doesn't have any potshots for PH escapes. How hard are the PH's in that canyon? Could they be defeated with a packtoss and partner assist? When it comes to PH's I don't have much experience so I try to err on the side of caution.

We defeated all the potholes but one with partner assist and one required a simple pack toss, Could have used a couple other techniques to escape it as well. A group of three or more should have no probelms with the potholes.

Yeah it was great, had a blast in telephone although i slipped at one point and ripped off a small section of skin on the tip of my pinkie. Then we did kolob and it was barely flowing, the 3 cfs they supposedly released never made it to the canyon. I bet there was only about 1/2 cfs actually going through the canyon although thats jsut a guess. I'll be down there again on the 26th and 27th if you wanna come.

When dry, the roads are generally OK for 2WD cars, though a bit of aggressive driving and some disdain for undercarriage damage might also be required.

Our friend took his Metro out there all the time. Totally doable. But, like Tom said, aggressive driving may be required. Just be prepared to go around obstacles instead of going over them.

Hey just got back and we had a good time down there, it also depends on how far back you wanna drive. We did red spur and that would be unreachable by a passenger car.
