Russell Gulch requires a separate Pristine Zone Permit

I asked the Park for clarification on the status of Russell Gulch. This is the result:

Russell Gulch, through the canyon, is not considered part of the Subway

route. It is an additional resource with its own limits and requires a
permit just as Das Boot or Upper Left Fork would.

A permit would be required for both Russell Gulch and the Left Fork "Subway" to complete the trip.

The Russell Gulch is zoned as Pristine with 20 visitors per day, with group size limit of 6.

Most canyons are pristine and will follow those limits. The exceptions are Orderville, Pine Creek, Keyhole, Left Fork "Subway", and the Narrows which are primitive with group size limit of 12.

Thanks for asking for clarification.

However, it is not much-traveled, and has a 20-person quota - thus it should not be much of a problem to add to your Subway permit when you pick that up, assuming your group size (for the Russell Gulch section) is 6 persons or less.

Interesting. A group I know of 12 went down the subway through RG last month. As far as I know, they were clear about their route and the desk didn't say peep?

Not all desk workers are fully trained on the obscure subtleties of the permit system.
