Steelhead fishing on the Salmon river
I will be heading out this weekend for a chance to catch a steelhead on an 8wt flyrod for the first time. If anyone has any advise on shortening the learning curve I am all ears. They say that it takes 30 hours average time to catch one steelhead on this river.

Good luck. I used to fish the Snake & Salmon rivers when I lived in Idaho. We used to limit out in about 2 hours. Never did get into fly fishing, but instead - we'd drift salmon eggs across the top (pretty much the same thing).

Didn't realize the season lasted so long in the spring.
Should be a blast. We had luck catching fair sized pinks in Alaska on 4-5wt rods one summer. Took more patience to fight but was epic fun. Most of my friends are fisheries biologist from that area (Lewiston, McCall, and Missoula) and stealhead fishing sounds legendary. Look forward to some photos.
Looking forward to a fall cast-n-blast trip down the Main Salmon wilderness run sometime in the next couple years.

Thanks for the info given so far. I will be wade fishing near stanley Idaho. Statistics are reporting 30 hours of fishing per 1 fish hooked in this area. Season goes until the end of the month. Theses fish will have swam 1800 river miles plus time in the ocean. It would be awesome to catch one on a flyrod since that is the only type of fishing that I do.

Spend some time in the local hot springs in that area. Boater's box can be nice if its not full. Several other riverside and hike-in hot springs with an 1.5 hour range of Stanley.
