    Sandstone and Coffee: The Wave

A couple of weeks ago I had the privalege to spend a day in the Coyote Buttes North Permit Area for the first time and I have to say that it was an awesome experience! The fact is I ignored the advice that I had read on the internet to not hike in until around nine or ten and instead I went ahead and started hiking before the sun came up. In actuality I got some pretty good shots in the hour after the sun came up so I'm glad I hiked in early, but at the same time it really did make for a long day out in the sun.

After hiking in I spent the first hour or so exploring a little ways up a side canyon called Sand Cove.

After exploring a little bit I headed up the sand dune and into the area of the main Wave. I was quite early for good midday light on The Wave so I decided to make some coffee and breakfast on the side of small side canyon that shoots off from the side of the main wave.

And while the coffee was heating up I decided to take advantage of the nice morning light.

Once the sun finally crept up in the sky high enough to eliminate the shadows on the main part of the wave I spent some time shooting the main view.

After I shot the main part of the wave I decided to walk up above and do some exploring, making a big loop and eventually scrambling back down into Sand Cove and in the afternoon. Just in time to catch all of the other people in the area on their way out.

Overall it was a great hike to an amazing place. Definitely recommended!

There is a much longer and more detailed trip report on my blog here http://ryancaryphotography.wordpress...ting-the-wave/.

I should have more images from the trip up on my website soon.

Thanks guys! Yeah it's a fairly overshot area but without a doubt it's still beautiful!

Thanks Deadeye, it's such a cool area. I really like the Sand Cove shot too, I seem to have arrived there at the perfect time to capture the really cool light of morning bouncing around, really exaggerating the the purple tones in the rock. It was really neat to see.

Sand Cove has really nice colors and structures, especially in the morning.
