Thread: permitting in escalante

    permitting in escalante

It appears that obtaining a permit for Death Hollow or Coyote Gulch is largely optional. Although I understand why it's a good idea to get one, are there any repercussions for not getting one (i.e., fines, getting escorted out, etc.)

I know someone who didn't get a permit in Coyote once. They were stopped by a ranger who issued them one. I would imagine they have the right to fine if they decided to though. I don't really know why you wouldn't get one though. It's free, it's available at all the trailheads. Where's the harm?

Because I'm flying out there on a Friday and prob will get there when the office is closed, and today they said they're not open on sat or sun...

You don't need to go to the office. Stop at any trailhead with a kiosk and get a self-serve permit. They're all over the place. I usually stop at the one on the Highway 12 bridge or Devil's Garden in case they're out at my destination trailhead.

I used to sign in as "Dick Cheney and his hairdresser Sergio", but that lost it's novelty after a while.
I tend to not let The Man know where I am, if I can help it.

Thanks. That answers it. Am trying to decide between Coyote Gulch and Death Hollow. Am planning a 2-night 3-dayer. Any preference? What are the differences in the hikes

Because of the date Coyote, but Nick has wayyyy more experience in Death Hollow than me!

matt-is that because of water level?

Yeah, Coyote Gulch all the way. Death Hollow and the stuff around the towns of Escalante/Boulder are in a completely different climate zone as the stuff lower on Hole-in-the-Rock like Coyote, Willow, etc. A lot more water in Death would make it particularly difficult and freeeeeeeeeeeezing cold.

Check out this trip report from March 17th a few years back. I did a day hike in Willow (near Coyote) and then an overnight on the Escalante (near Death). We had beautiful warm weather in Willow and we were crossing ice bridges in the Escalante.
