Frary Peak - Antelope Island - 01.03.2012
My wife, baby, sister in law, brother in law and niece took a hike to the top of Frary Peak on Antelope Island on Tuesday. I love that place, especially in the winter. Void of people, void of bugs, void of heat.
Since this winter has been crap for enjoying snowsports, we decided to hike out there instead. This is the third time we've been out there around New Years in the last 5 years. This time was unique because we took our 6 month olds to the top. It was their FIRST PEAK of many I'm sure. The top of this hike has some tricky sections to it and those that have issues with exposure might not want to take their baby up there. It was well within our comfort range but missteps would be very bad.
We started hiking about 1:40 and got down at 5:30 so took almost 4 hours exactly. We spent about 20 minutes on the top. The bonus of coming down around this time is great low angle shadows on the hike and a sunset for your car ride out.

Looks great. Do you still have to pay to get over there? And do they still prohibit you from hiking Frary from the north end?
Just where is it I could find bear, beaver, and other critters worth cash money when skint?

Ah. When I was there nine years ago they only allowed you on the extreme north end and only a few trails were open. They didn't want you hiking south of this arbitrary line, so I had to off-trail hike from the north end up ridges to the peak. They were just building the trailhead and trail from the east, basically straight under the peak. Do they have a trail from the north side now? How long is it? Are there still buffalo on the island?
