Utah will pick up Notre Dame QB Dayne Crist, if they can. Crist will graduate next month and doesn't have to sit out a year.

If that fails look for Utah to pick up Cody Stevenson. Cody is from Juan Diego HS and is currently playing for Dixie. The kid has a canon for an arm. He didn't play football until his Sophomore year in HS. FWIW: Cody's dad was my defensive coordinate two years ago and his brother played for me.

Utah is currently a high priority target for every disgruntled or JUCO QB in the country. Everyone expects the QB position to be wide open at Utah next year because Wynn can't stay healthy.

he may have to sit out a year transferring up from D2 to D1. D1 football is not "one-time transfer exempt." source NCAA transfer guide pg 20

Utah has asked a QB recruit to come in as a freshman rather than go straight on a mission

When transferring from a lower to higher division you don't have to sit out a year.

    Utes' freshman QB, Shreve, transfers

The Utes have announced that Tyler Shreve, a freshman quarterback who was redshirting this year, has left the school on 'good terms,' and has transferred to Riverside Community College to play baseball and football.

We'll have reaction from practice today, but the transfer isn't much of a surprise. Shreve had more opportunities than any of the other backups to earn the No. 2 spot, but could never seem to make much headway.

He probably realized he was doomed to ride the bench his whole career or maybe end up like other quarterbacks and play at another position. Seems he decided he'd rather have a different future.

Former Notre Dame QB Crist transferring to Kansas

    Today, 3:05 pm ET

(Sports Network) - Former Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist is transferring to the football program at Kansas, reuniting him with his former head coach, Charlie Weis.

Crist posted the news on his Twitter account Thursday, saying, "After a long & difficult decision making process, I'm incredibly excited to join the Kansas football team."

Crist began this season as the Irish's starter, but was replaced by Tommy Rees after one half of play in Notre Dame's season-opener against South Florida.

Weis was the Irish's head coach for Crist's first two years in the program, but was fired after a 6-6 season in 2009. He was named Kansas' head coach earlier this month.

Crist's most productive season at Notre Dame was his junior season in 2010. He completed more than 59 percent of his passes for 2,033 yards and 15 touchdowns, but suffered a ruptured patella tendon in the ninth game of that season.

Cody would have fit into Chows offense nicely... but who knows what offense the Utes will run next year. They said it depends on personal. Also it looks like Chase Hanson (Lone Peak QB committed to Utah) is going to move his mission back a couple of months so he can play football for one year before completing his mission... but I hate that deal, teach a kid to play QB, have him leave for 2 years, than have him come back and have to teach him all over again.

Quarterback Cody Stevenson to transfer from Dixie State

With Stefan Cantwell preparing for an LDS Church mission, it was no secret Dixie State was going to need to find a new starting quarterback for the 2012 campaign. Many felt sophomore Cody Stevenson had a decent chance of winning the job back, but Stevenson will not be around to compete for it.
Stevenson, who started the final nine games in 2010 and the first five contests of last season before being supplanted by Cantwell, will transfer to the University of Utah.

It is unknown when Stevenson would be eligible to play, but he would have two seasons remaining.

“We wish Cody the very best,” said DSC coach Scott Brumfield. “We hope he succeeds.”

Stevenson isn’t the first Red Storm athlete to transfer to Utah in DSC’s Division II era.

Tauni Vakapuna, who had two stints as a Dixie State running back, has had some success after transferring to the Utes. Vakapuna rushed for 104 yards on 31 carries this season as a senior.

In Stevenson’s case, last year may have been a matter of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. A dropback passer, Stevenson struggled to complete throws with little time to throw. DSC’s young offensive line had trouble dealing with the opposing teams’ pass rush.

In Week 6 Brumfield rolled the dice with the more athletic Cantwell, a true freshman, and although it didn’t pay dividends in the win column, the Red Storm started putting more points on the board. This, in large part, was due to Cantwell’s ability to avoid the rush better.

“We started four freshmen offensive linemen and it probably wasn’t fair to him but that’s what we had,” Brumfield said. “We feel like (Stevenson) will succeed when he can sit back and throw the ball. It just wasn’t a good fit for him.”

Tight end Joe Don Duncan, who tallied six 100-yard receiving games last season, said he felt bad for how things ended up for Stevenson.

“It’s nothing against Cody why he didn’t play (the second half of the season),” Duncan said. “Cody has a great arm. He’s more of a pocket passer quarterback and our offense evolved into more of a spread with a quarterback who can scramble more.”

Stevenson, who prepped at Juan Diego, could not be reached for comment.

Last season Stevenson completed 68 of 125 passes for 839 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. As a true freshman in 2010, he completed 54 percent of his attempts for 1,707 yards for 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Cantwell compiled 1,609 yards passing and 12 touchdowns with nine interceptions. Although his accuracy (52.5) was not ideal, he threw for 300 yards or more in three of his first four starts and rushed for 85 or more yards twice. For his efforts, Cantwell was named Great Northwest Freshman of the Year.

When Cantwell took over midway through the 2011 campaign, it marked the second straight season a true freshman started at quarterback for DSC. Brumfield said he thinks next year’s starting signal caller will likely come from a batch of returners.

Kaleo Nawahine, a sophomore to be, saw brief work in five games. Luke Hobbs redshirted last year as a freshman and is expected to return. Also Jake Soffe, who backed up Judd Thompson in 2009, returns from a mission and could challenge for the job.

“We’ll have some experience there,” Brumfield said. “I don’t feel like we’ll have another true freshman start next year. We feel like the program is going in the right direction. Its a tough deal losing Cody. We feel bad, but it’s part of the game.”

Said Duncan: “I’m going to be rooting for him when he goes to Utah. He was a good competitor. He was fun to hang out with on and off the field.”
