Moose Encounters in Big Cottonwood Canyon

In the past two months, I have had 3 amazing moose photography sessions. 2 of which occurred up at Willow Fork in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

The first time I saw this couple in early October, it looked like the bull was trying to get some but the cow wasn't really having it. After photographing them a while, I realized that they were both messing around with the other.

The second time I went up was last week and as soon as loud hikers left, sure enough, they came out of the woods. This time about 5 minutes after the couple came down, a BIG bull came down to challenge the other. The small one wasn't having it and ran off into the woods. You could tell he was bent though because he came grunting down to challenge the big boy only to scare off again. After about 10 minutes of them being gone in the woods, the cow came running back to the lake with the bull close behind. This time though, they didn't fight anymore, just kind of hung out close. As I was packing up, another 4th moose showed up on the other side of the lake and you could tell she was trying to join the party as well.

A very cool experience and one that I've not come close to having in my 9 years here.
