Family's first hike
Took the family on their first hike on Labor Day. I carried our 18mth old in a baby bjorn (huge mistake for my back, now buying a backpack kid carrier)most of the 3 miles we went and I carried our 4.5 year old for about 3/4 mile on my shoulders. I am proud of him, he did a little over 2 miles on his own.
He now wants to go hiking every day.

Get your 4 y/o old a hiking stick. It easily adds 50% to how far kids can hike.
I went down to the hardware store and bought a 3/4 x 3' wood dowel, drilled a hole in the top and put a leather wrist strap through and than let the kids color and decorate the hiking sticks. For some reason the hiking staff really helps kids hike better as it gives them something to play with along the trail.

It's funny you mention that. My friend gave me a single trekking pole he had laying around and I gave it to him and he immediately went in the back yard and started hiking with his hiking stick.
