    Mosquitoes on the Muir Trail?

OK... I know the answer is yes, but how bad are they?

I'm heading out next week on another long hike (more to be posted soon.) My route will be part John Muir Trail, part Sierra High Route and the rest misc trails or off-trail travel. I know some of you have experience in this region and I'm curious how bad the bugs really are. I know it's different each year -- but stories of needing full-body bug suit are scaring me a bit. Should I take at least a bug hat -- or will DEET be enough? I'm usually not too bothered by bugs, but again some the trip reports I've read have me thinking I should up my protection.

    Thanks,

last year, i had the HORRENDOUS mozzies for about 4 days on the JMT. they were only terrible for a little stretch in mid-july. of course, the water year is totally different this year, i expect they may be two weeks later.

i wore long but lightweight nylon pants and a ultra-light nylon windshirt with a headnet. i could barely tolerate the mayhem. but, they were basically gone a week later.

    but, who really knows?

Thanks CarpeyB. I will probably get a head-net and hope for the best.

BTW -- I went back and checked out your trip report and photos. Good stuff.
