Brown Duck Basin
Just got back Saturday evening from backpacking Brown Duck Basin. Conditions were super dry and it has been some time since I have spent a trip in the Uintas without being rained on. We did hear thunder to the east and the clouds threatened but we squeaked out dry as a bone. The trailhead from Moon Lake to just below Brown Duck Lake was mostly mosquito free. After setting up camp on the north side of Island Lake, the mosquitos came out in wicked force. However, we had a slight breeze on Friday that made it very manageable.
There was a fairly large scout group camped at Brown Duck Lake so we hiked the additional 15-20 minutes up to Island Lake. We enjoyed solitude there without any others for the 3 days. There was the occasional traffic on the trail that passed through. Outside of that it sure was quiet. The fishing at Island Lake was superb and we were ripping fish out like there was an endless supply.
The hike up to Island Lake from Moon Lake was approx 7.5 miles with 2,000' gain. I took my 10 year old on his first ever backpacking trip along with a few other scouts and their parents and they all loved it. It was a perfect three day trip.
