Missouri Heights Schoolhouse & storm

Went out for a drive yesterday up on Missouri Heights, which is a high mesa above the Roaring Fork Valley. My main destination was one of several historic schoolhouses, built in 1888:

The approaching storm was getting pretty interesting, lot's of thunder. We have been getting the most intense storms in the last week or so, this particular one dropped over 2" in an hour near Carbondale

Shot from Hwy. 82, Carbondale & Mt. Sopris. The storm did not move for over 20 minutes.

nice b/w's !

how do you guys get such good b/w's out of your dslr ? all my conversions just look muddled. yuo've got good dynamic range, good tonal separation, what am i missing ? does it matter if you shoot in monochrome, or do you use certain software for the conversion ? i love b/w, but find it pointless to try most of the time cause i have to work so hard to get a 1/2 ass'ed result in post.

I shoot in RAW color, very important.
I use Aperture for post prod. (sometimes Photoshop), and for B&W Aperture allows you to apply different colored filters.
A knowledge about how different colored filters affects b&w film is helpful (a green filter will lighten green colors in b&w, as a red filter will darken blue colors etc)

Here is another school house in Glenwood Springs, that has found a new life as a venue for local music. I am interested in our historic buildings, and how they can be saved and maybe re-used.

i always shoot in RAW and the conversion to monochrome in either DPP or PS. i just never seem to get results that satisfy. taught myself photography and shot b/w exclusively for about 10 years. did al my own processing and printing adn worked in pro labs off n on, so am aware of filter effects. it seems to me that the effects of the post processing digital filters is much more subdued than the hoya's i used w/ b/w film. maybe a false preception since it has been many years since i have worked w/ film or been in a darkroom. really miss my silver halide prints.

It made for a beautiful contrast. What I love about black and white is when there is stark contrast without washout. Your photo is just beautiful.

A little embarrassing, but I mis-named the building. It is actually the Upper Cattle Creek School House. There is a Lower Cattle Creek one too, I will have to find it.
