San Rafael Desert Road Closed at San Rafael River Bridge, July 2011

San Rafael Desert Road is Closed at San Rafael River Bridge, July 2011 --

As of July 1, 2011 the San Rafael River is in flood, and it has washed out the road at the San Rafael River Bridge. The river is running over the road north of the bridge. It will probably be until late July or August before the road is passable. I have been down this road for twenty-five years, and never have seen the river this high -- it is filling and swamping the entire channel. This is a once in a generation (or more) flow, and interesting to see. But it also stopped me journey south.... And the bugs are very thick within miles of the river.

Don't even think about trying to get across. I waded in to check it, and the water is deep and fast in the washout. Unless you are in a Humvee, you are not going to make it over.
