Thread: Rail Trail Fail

    Rail Trail Fail

I took the bike out for a spin on part of the D and RGW Rail Trail (Denver and Rio Grande Western) in Davis County - which really is a very nice paved trail.

I hit a spot, hopefully there are plans to "resolve" this issue.

    Located here

Anyways, it's a great trail, I hear that it will go from Roy and even connect to the Legacy Parkway trail. It's pretty close to completion.

I will leave it up to the imagination on what I did at this point, I sure would hate to get in trouble.

But I wonder what will happen in the future. Sureley they won't spend a bunch of money to tunnel under this old rail line? Although I think it still does get used, just to drop stuff off at the warehouse down the line.

They built plenty of tunnels for the Jordan River Parkway in Salt Lake County.. don't know why they wouldn't do it there as well.

You don't understand the railroad. You need divine intervention to put anything under a rail line. There is currently a boundry line adjustment going on between Sp. Fork and Mapleton where Mapleton would receive property in their city from Sp. Fork. This is because of the cost for Spanish Fork to put utilities under the RR to service the land. The cost benefit analysis was that it was better to make a deal with Mapleton than to try to get permission from the RR and then try to put utilities under the tracks. It is VERY tough and expensive to mess with the RR.

Yeah there are several tunnels already, but I think they were already existing. This trail is built on an old railbed so I'm not sure how the old railway intersected with the line shown in the photos.

On another note, I'm not sure how much of this line is owned by the "railroad" or how that works. It's pretty much a line that's going between the FreePort center in Clearfield. Granted it's a spur from the main line, so I'm not sure what's involved with that.

If you view the map above in Satellite view, you'll see the line ends @ 1/2 mile to the West.

Only when I was coming back did I see the "detour" warnings

It is clearly in Clearfield on the map. Don't put the bad mouth on O Town
And it looks like it is the feeder line for Freeport Center as it is on their land. But yes the RR can be a hassle to work with.
