Red Rocks and Maple Canyon Guidebooks?

Does anyone know of a good climbing guidebook for Red Rocks in Las Vegas and Maple Canyon in Utah?

he Maple book situation is kind of a bummer. There have been rumors of a book for a loong time, but nothing ever comes out of them. It would be nice to have one to spread the traffic around. Probably the best thing is either the Dr Topo, mountain project or go with someone who knows the area.

For Red Rocks, this one great:

Ya, the Red Rocks guide Matt linked to is by far the best of the books that are out. The Maple book has been "Ready for printing." for like five years. Darren K. at Mountain Works (the climbing shop inside the Quarry, Provo's climbing gym) has been working on the book for YEARS, and has almost been done for YEARS... it may never come out. Maybe someone else should take on the project.

Jason Stevens came out with a book over 10 years ago, it is out of print now but you can buy a .pdf version for $12. There are many more routes now than his guide includes but it will get you started at least. In most of the newer areas, people will write grades and names in chalk at the base of the better/more classic routes.

Edit: Dr. Topo removed all the actual topos good luck finding them (the download topo link doesn't work).

Red Rocks: Yeah, the Handren guide is awesome and really sets the bar high for quality of work. Rumor has a new edition in the next few years to account for all the newer stuff, and, that the book is rapidly becoming out of print (hugely popular).

Maple: too funny. Give the DK a bad time (that ol' broken record). I've, ahem, seen a sample of his work and the bugger's huge and well done but still in rough draft. Not many people have that kind of knowledge of an area. I think some folks wouldn't like it as the guide may take few routes down a notch, grade-wise. Jason's stuff is still great, and, gets the job done. The route names at the base are done in chalk, not permanent, FYI.

Thanks for the info. Picked up Jason's pdf for maple, we'll see how it goes next week. I'll definitely be grabbing that red rocks book before i head down to vegas next time.

Rumor has the Handren guide out of print, but, most shops still have it in stock.

Jason's guide is pretty functional, for sure.

You can pick up a copy of my Maple Canyon Guidebook here:

It has over 600 routes in it, history, as well as write-ups by the route developers of Maple.
