    The Wave

We finally scored some permits to Coyote Buttes North. We hiked in via the typical wire pass route and exited out of the lesser traveled notch to complete a full loop.
Extremely high winds (50mph+) during our day in CBN reeked havoc on our gear... good times

    My respekt, great shots.
I love the whole CBN area.
The fisheye perspective, gives an other impression.
I hate the sandstorms of the southwest.
I did your experiences in the CBS and other places.
Did you protect your lenses by an filter? Or is this kind of protection to fearful?

    Michel,

I was shooting in Death valley once during a sandstorm, after slapping on an UV filter to protect the front of the lens from sand abrasion. I was using the Canon 24-105 mm lens and after returning to the hotel, I found the zoom ring to be gritty. Fine sand had crept under the zoom ring and was a pain to clean.

That experience taught *me* a few things: (a) use an UV filter (high quality I may add so as not to degrade the image quality) to protect the front of the lens, (b) avoid zooming the lens if you can, (c) wrap a handkerchief or something over the lens, making sure that it extends over the mount area, and (d) not to shoot if the sand is really flying.

    Arindam,

Thank you for your helpful hints.
    I've this one. It's ok?
And I should use this filter only during 'the sands' and not in canyons, landscapes shooting, etc (decrease of image quality)?

    Michel,

I don't use an UV filter under normal shooting conditions. The Schneider filter looks fine; I use a B+W *silm mount* filter.

I would personally not use an UV filter in canyons (even though it's very sandy). Afterward, I give it a thorough clean with a rocket blower and microfiber cloths.
