    FreezeFest IX

Freezefest is an open invite event - anyone foolish enough to come out is
welcome. Dates are Dec 26 to Jan 3rd at least. Some people stay longer. It is based out of the Sandthrax campsite at the 28.2 mile marker on route 95, southeast of Hanksville. Most of the canyons done are (mostly) dry ones, conditions permitting. One of the centerpieces is the descent of the Black Hole on January 1st, for those equipped and inclined. This one is wet.

It is an open invitation event. It is also free form. There is no official organizers or leaders. People come and go as they see fit. People form their own canyon groups daily, as they see fit. Often as many as 5 or 6, sometimes more, trips go out daily. Mix and match. Festivities surround the fire in the evening, weather permitting, or in a series of "festive party tents." Those who own these tents and are inclined to bring them, set up and use them for snowy or windy nights.

A discussion among past participants, sharing lessons learned from past FreezeFests is happening on the Canyons group, starting here and covering most of the subsequent posts.

Plan to see many of the old gang and meet some new folks too.

Can't wait. I don't think we'll have the same snow as last year though :(

Normally this is a solo trip because of all the shit I take, but if anybody wants to carpool from SLCish, let me know and maybe we can work it out. I'll be out there the night of the 27th through the 2nd.

    Should be epic

Oh does anybody have a boccee set, mine is still broken.

    Matt,
Don and I are heading down early, early, early on the 28th. We want to get down in time for a full canyon that day. Maybe Josh too... and in that case it might be a little tight (Nissan Frontier crew cab) but manageable. We'll probably be heading north via Mystic Mike's on the evening of the 1st and getting home on the 2nd. Welcome to join if our itinerary doesn't cramp your style too much.

I'd really like to make this and freeze my boccee balls but my wife is dragging my family to HAWAII. I'll think about you popsicles.

It's a default line that appears when somebody is posting from their phone.

January 1st 2011 Black Hole Fundraiser

The 9th annual New Year's Day Black Hole descent will be sponsored this year,
with the intent to raise money for those determined defenders of the wilderness.
Mom! Well maybe not your mom, but they are somebody's mom. The Great Old Broads
    for Wilderness

Mom taught you to do the right thing, correct??

Here is the announcement and how to pledge support for those crazies in the
canyon. Sponsor a Black Hole Descender!!

    http://greatoldbroads.org/email/blackhole2011.html

    and their home page

    http://www.greatoldbroads.org/

If anyone planning to descend the Black Hole with us on January 1st, doesn't
want their presence included in the final tally of participants, e-mail me and I
will ensure that the wish is honored. I will tell your mom though! ;-)

A bit more of what they do....
This small organization has a long history of advocacy
against grazing on public lands. We can get behind that, right? I
understand that they also go about marking with GPS all the places
where ORV have done damage to help make the point of the extent of the
damage. Even if you are an ORV fan ya gotta support that, right?
