New side canyon up Boulder Mail Trail from Escalante
We (husband, dog, & I) wanted a work-out hike & found a new isolated canyon that led us to the Boulder Mail Trail with bona fide cairns. The Escalante River & Pine Creek had more water than we expected, so we bush-wacked up a pristine narrow canyon that came out on "brain" type of slick rock on the Boulder Mail trail.
We did work-out going straight up on the slick rock, along with gale-force winds. The northern part of the Henrys were covered in snow, looking more like the Wasatch Mountain range than their normal obscurity.
Took off jackets to t-shirts when we trekked across Antone Flats, the Pinions & Junipers trees were wonderful wind breakers. After 3 hours we turned back and with wobbly legs, hiked down the traditional way back to Escalante trailhead behind the high school.
Sometimes it takes an aversion to getting wet to discover a new canyon.
