    What's Your Speed

I just upgraded to a 7mb service, I ran Speedtest and here are my results,

    Download--6.08mb
    upload--.75mb
    ping--87ms

    http://www.speedtest.net/

    seems pretty good to me.

Thought it might be fun to have a thread dedicated to comparisons.

I have Baja Cable not sure what speed I am paying for but I think its the fastest available.
It is better this early in the am also

I'm on Baja, too, but I need a Static IP for work and the speed is pretty slow!

    Download: .42 mb/s
    Upload .11 mb/s
    ping 66ms

Comcast (tested over wireless N on my laptop)
    Down: 11.0
    Up: 1.53
    Ping: 25ms

For me short latency is even more important than download. I'm often logged onto a system in my office and latency makes typing suck.

Hmmm, not so hot... Xpress web in Kanab, via Microwave beam up on the hill and home wireless network, 40$ a month.

Hmmm, I wonder what my alternatives are?

    Download--13.22 Mb/s
    Upload--0.87 Mb/s
    ping--17 ms

That's over Ethernet. My laptop is getting 11.05 Mb/s download, wireless G with the router a couple of rooms away.

I pay (too much) for 10-15 Mb/s, and "up to" 1.0 Mb/s upload.

Oops, my bad. You're right, they should be reversed.

Baja Broadband, I have the cheapest option they offer. I think I spend $30 a month.

  14. #13
    Down - 9.23
    Up - .97
    Ping - 38ms

Baja in Santa Clara/Saint George. $50 a month after taxes, charges, and misc.

I'm totally happy with mine. It gets me the gay porn at the speed of light.

OK, so I'm not too far out there, price-wise. My 13 down/.87 up/17ms is just a few cents over $50, all in (Canadian - which is almost at par again. Woo-hoo!)

    Here at work:
    35.35MB on the download
    14.62MB on the upload
    ping is 21ms

At home it's much slower, depending on what machine i use.

  17. #16
    At work:
    37.43 download
    3.41 upload
    ping 55

Could you explain this in laymans terms?

That's the "ping" number. How fast it takes a message to get from your computer to the server and back again. A low ping number (in milliseconds) is short latency. Not how wide the pipe is, but how short a run. If ststephen is logged in to a remote server, every time he types a letter, it goes up the pipe and back down, then shows the letter on the screen. If the latency is high, everything lags.
