Star Trek turned 44 years old today

On Sept. 8, 1966, NBC aired the first episode of what it touted as a science fiction series for adults. Star Trek went on to air for only three seasons, but grew into a towering TV and film franchise and a cultural touchstone that transcends generations.

The first episode aired on a Thursday night and was called The Man Trap, and TV viewers were introduced to characters who would become iconic. You can watch the full episode on YouTube, and here's the teaser NBC ran to entice viewers to watch the first installment...

I can't believe I'm that old. I think I will go watch that episode again.

Wow! I have never seen that episode. Watching Star Trek brings back lots of great family memories. My favorite episode was "Trouble with Tribbles".

I was always a next generation fan myself... I recently did some work in the home of one of the creators. It was kind of cool.

I will take any comers in a game of "Name that Trek" (TOS). I can usually get it in the first few words of the prologue.

Love Star Trek. It was a family thing to sit around and watch reruns and then when next generation came on tv we never missed an episode.

I watched it in first run with my family. While you may have had the hots for Kirk, Tanya, my dad had the hots for Ohura! At 8 years-old I didn't care about that stuff, but I was hooked on the show.

I had it for Uhura too! But not as much as Kirk! She was looking good in the movies later too! Loved her in the bare belly shirt and she could sing! I dont think I saw it until mid 20s or so.
