    iPhone HDR

Apple officially released iOS 4.1 today for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Amongst the new features is one that enables the phone to take HDR pics. This is going to be ugly.

The new proprietary iTripod is required to keep the phone steady while shooting bracketed images and only cost $500.

so... real HDR or just some sort of filter.

I'm assuming it's not real HDR, must be just single image thing. Whoever gets 4.1 installed first, try it out and put up some pics!

"He revealed that the new feature will take three rapid photos -- one regular, one underexposed and one overexposed. When the pictures are combined, it creates an HDR photo."

Sounds like it's just their way of getting around the fact that they don't have a decent flash... since HDR can sometimes be used as a poor mans flash (at least for the image they are showing, it looks like they could have had the same image captured with a decent camera and a low-powered fill flash to lighten the subject)

I'm guessing it just does exposure fusion to an 8-bit file.

I've heard the LED flash on the iPhone 4 is actually pretty good for a phone. It will be impressive if they can really get three quick images for an HDR while the phone is hand held.

The flash on my 4 works really well. I was impressed.

There's really no such thing as a decent on-camera flash. Direct flash is the worst possible light.

well, the worst possible light is no light at all, so when acca's up in the club, rockin' in the dim lights, and he needs a little flash, the iphone isn't too bad...

Well... depends on the subject. I've seen some shots that I think would have benefited by no light at all
