I wouldn't pull out the skis yet; this time of year it will be gone quickly.
Measurable snow isn't unusual in August in the Wasatch. I've seen it snow as low as 7000 feet even in July (1993). Snow above 9000-9500 feet is pretty common in late August/early September.
Here is a screenshot of a weather forecast I took in 2008 (notice the date of August 15) in Colorado:
Last year we were snowed on while climbing Black Mountain (10,860 feet) on August 15. It snowed down to 8700 feet.
Here is a photo I took of Mount Timpanogos (from Battle Creek) on September 1 2008:
I've been snowed on 3 out of the past 10 Labor Day weekends (all spent in Utah and Colorado). This is me on Labor Day weekend 2004:
Every time it snows in August and September the skiers get excited (and the hikers think of throwing the boots in the closet), but truth be known the snow never sticks around this early in the season, but melts quickly. There are still plenty of warm days left and the fall colors are starting to come out. Don't hang up those boots yet. In about three to four weeks the colors will really be out and fresh snow always makes for great photography. Can't wait.
