Canyoneer with no technical ability
This is just above the first "real" rap in Das Boot. (we do a rap above this into the canyon)
Looks like left to decay in a "natural" state meant the Park service "naturally" cut off his antlers above the eye guards. Looks to have been a very nice, more than likely six point bull.
The smell was getting bad, it will be real nice in another week or two.I'm not Spartacus
It'll come back.

Seriously, why would they cut off the antlers? Isn't the rule that we leave things as they are so others can enjoy seeing them in their natural state? Why would they destroy the antlers... so no one else would?

Kevin would be so disgusted with the Torontoans.........(is that a real word, are they real people. those from Toronto)
This group was scary, they hollered at us from the last rap in Das Boot and asked what we used for an anchor. I told them of the deadman our group had just constructed and used.
They were confused as to why someone would use such a thing. We moved on and they passed us in the Subway. They were using 9/16 webbing to handline down the 2 raps, they could only holds on for half their descent, then fall into the 2 pools. (oh--and I'm sure no one cares, but there wasn't a helmet in the crowd.) But hey, what's a country to do about Easterners?I'm not Spartacus

Elk Horn.... probably selling it on eBay as an Asian afrodesiac.
Asian bidders who can sell ground elk horn for as much as $300 per oz. because of its purported aphrodisiac and medicinal qualities.

I want to see the TR from the people that actually did run into this elk when it was stuck but still alive.

Judging by the photos, it's more than nicking off the points. My guess is that they did it so no one would go in and "salvage" the rack for their wall...

They definitely harvested the largest part of the antlers. I'm just saying, if the plan is to leave "things" in the park in their natural state, then they failed here.
As canyoneers we have to deal with rocks, branches, tree's, etc. We should have had the (pleasure/dis pleasure) of dealing with this animal in it's natural state.
Or----------they should have removed the entire animal. I've seen several other animals dead in canyons, such as Desert Sheep and deer, their respective
horns/antlers were left in place. And the value of a mature male Desert sheep's horn, could easily garner 6 digit income.I'm not Spartacus

So this was the "wildlife issue" that kept Das Boot closed for the last week and a half or so! I can see closing things down while this big boy was still alive and kicking. Thankfully, the smell isn't enough to keep the closure in place, though.
I've seen elk sheds and lots of elk tracks along the approach to Left Fork and Das Boot...doubt that this is the first four-footed canyoneerer to meet his demise in this spot!
