Mt. Raymond via Butler Fork in Big Cottonwood Canyon

Headed up Butler Fork in Big Cottonwood Canyon after seeing the partial lunar eclipse over the Oquirrh Mountains on Saturday morning. My wife was running to Dog Lake via the upper Mill A Basin/Dog Lake junction and I was hiking to the peak of Mt. Raymond.

We started off around 6:30 am. Mill A Basin is awesome and was a great place to be in the early morning. After making it to Baker Pass I headed up the ridge to Mt. Raymond and hit the peak at about 8:30 am. The view of the SL Twin Peaks, Olympus, Grandeur Peak, Salt Lake City, Big Cottonwood and Millcreek Canyons is nice from the top. Mt. Raymond is rockier than neighboring Gobblers Knob which makes it a little more interesting in my opinion.

After getting a call at the peak from my wife who was already back at the car, I headed down. I went down a direct drainage below the peak which made for 1000 feet elevation in 15 minutes. I made it back to the car in about 1.5 hours from the top. A great hike and a definite recommend.

    TH: 7100 feet
    Mt. Raymond Peak: 10,200 feet
    8.5 miles
No other people on the trail on the way up (a few campers on a ridge)
About 7 hikers on the way down and about 25 boy scouts doing trail work (nice!)
