Thread: Arches that face north/south

    Arches that face north/south

I have been wanted to do some star trails with the north star centered inside an Arch. I have been picking over old photos and searching online and the only Arch that would even come close is Delicate but due to the cliff on the south side the angle wont really worth without a fish eye.

Anyone have any other idea as far as Arches what would have a clear view of the north star.... because I am really drawing a blank here.

Covert Arch - Big pretty arch with a perfect north-south face alignment.

Really? I was thinking it was more east/west and that the wall directly to the north would block out the northern night sky from under the arch.

This was the second one that came to mind but due to access its not going to be my first choice.

Covert Arch trailhead is along Winter Camp Ridge.

There's no real trail.....it's mostly a hike across slickrock and there's a lot of crypto to avoid along the way.

There's a GPS track for Winter Camp Ridge on my website here, if you want it: http://www.myxj.net/blog/trails/utah-gps-tracks

Funnel Arch would also probably work great.... and it's a hell of a lot easier to get to.

    Thanks guys keep'em coming.

Funnel Arch looks prefect, definitely going to add that one to the top of the list.
I guess I should also mention that I would like to have a cooler full of beer to pass the time while my camera does all the work.

That narrows things down a bit... although I can't blame you.
