MuddyCreek San Rafael--ADVISE?

3 QUESTIONS: 1-Is the south end of muddy creek worth seeing? I see some big cave lookin area below the big gooseneck. Wonder if it's worth checkin out. 2.. Has anyone explored muddy canyon? 3- What's the best way to drive to the airstrip? That's where I want to park. Any other knowledge is greatly appreciated. Thanks. 4k

I have hiked from T.Butte south...I have hiked from the airstrip north and south...all a great hikes...my favorite would be from T. Butte down threw the Chute. Nice camping too...Right below Hondo Arch. I have not been in Muddy Canyon. Great area to explore. Mines, arches, etc...If you are in the area, you should hike Cistern and Ramp Canyon loop. Great!

Upper Muddy Creek above Tomsich Butte is also good for backpacking. Little Gem and Poor Canyon offer pretty good water.

If you start from the airstrip and go up canyon, consider camping in Chimney Canyon, if only because the water taste better than the creek! There aren't any good campsites in the narrows of the Chute, but there are other places outside the narrows. For the hike downcanyon from the airstrip, it is better to do that one as a day hike as it is only a few hours each way.

Watch for horseflies or gnats this time of year though. If they aren't out yet, they soon will be.
