ZION NATIONAL PARK, Utah (AP) -- Zion National Park officials say a woman died after falling 1,000 feet from a rocky overlook.
Hikers reported the fall late Tuesday afternoon. Park officials say the woman was hiking alone on the trail to Angel's Landing and fell in an area called Scout Lookout. Her body was spotted on a ledge about 1,000 feet below.
With darkness approaching Tuesday night, rangers decided to postpone the recovery effort. On Wednesday morning, a team crossed the fast-moving Virgin River and conducted a technical climb to the ledge where the woman's body was recovered.
Officials say they believe she was in her 60s. They have not yet confirmed her identity.
Park officials and the Washington County Sheriff's Office are investigating.

I feel guilty that I read this and feel put out, knowing that this is the 3rd woman to fall off of the Angels Landing hike in the last year to die, and I realize this is going to impact me eventually by having the park close it, or drastically change it. I wish this woman's loved ones well.

Um, kinda sorta. They have SEVEN at Emerald Pools - one of those is probably Keith/Heaps. Many, MANY more on Angels Landing! There was one in lower Pine Creek two years ago that did not get much publicity, etc. etc. Yeah, not comprehensive, but gives you an idea of the wide range of misadventures available.

Trivia Question: How much concrete will it take when they fill in Zion and make it a parking lot for Kolob Res. and Zion Ponderosa?

What's the over/under on the closure date for Angel's Landing? I say Sept. 1, 2010 and take the under.

Angels Landing Hike?! It sucks. Way over-rated! So was Lady Mountain, and now look what happened there!

Rumor has it that witnesses said the fall was a jump and looked like a suicide.

Alex, the first boy was found sometime around 9 AM. There was a team with kayaks already up at Chamberlain Ranch waiting to launch to sweep the Narrows. When I arrived I went up to the end of Riverside Walk and then did a sweep down river from the first victim to the Temple of Sinawava. Simultaneously the decision was made to halt the Kayakers from launching at Chamberlain. Another crew swept the river from Temple of Sinawava on down. The second victim was located fairly soon after. When we were coming back down canyon we noticed several kayakers that were scouting Satans Staircase for a "Fun-Run". By that time the operation had been completed. I do know that several local "volunteer" whitewater specialists had been called and deployed.
PS: Have an awesome Yampa trip! I am really looking forward to a relaxing 5 days on the S.J.!
