    Woman dies on Angel's Landing

I swear we get 2-3 of these a year. Bo has been busy this year already.

ZION NATIONAL PARK, Utah (AP) -- Zion National Park officials say a woman died after falling 1,000 feet from a rocky overlook.
Hikers reported the fall late Tuesday afternoon. Park officials say the woman was hiking alone on the trail to Angel's Landing and fell in an area called Scout Lookout. Her body was spotted on a ledge about 1,000 feet below.
With darkness approaching Tuesday night, rangers decided to postpone the recovery effort. On Wednesday morning, a team crossed the fast-moving Virgin River and conducted a technical climb to the ledge where the woman's body was recovered.
Officials say they believe she was in her 60s. They have not yet confirmed her identity.
Park officials and the Washington County Sheriff's Office are investigating.

I feel guilty that I read this and feel put out, knowing that this is the 3rd woman to fall off of the Angels Landing hike in the last year to die, and I realize this is going to impact me eventually by having the park close it, or drastically change it. I wish this woman's loved ones well.

I don't even feel guilty about it. If it were a cave in Utah Valley it would have been cemented shut already. I wish there were a way to tell her that along with everything else this mistake cost her, others will pay a price as well.

Yep! 3 in the last 3 days! Crossed the river this morning twice at 500+ CFS. Great flow for kayakers, but make sure you know what you're doing. The water is cold and swift!

Impossible! the rangers said you can't even stand up in the Virgin at 200 cfs.

I found this little tid-bit to be very interesting.

A hiking fatality Tuesday at Zion National Park adds to a list of fatalities since the park's establishment as Makuntaweap National Monument on July 31, 1909 by President William Taft. According to the National Park Service, the following fatalities have been recorded on the park's trails:

    Emerald Pools: 7

    Angels Landing: 5+

    Lady Mountain: 2+

    Canyon Overlook: 2

    Hidden Canyon: 2

    Observation Point: 2

    Watchman: 2

    Cathedral Mountain: 1

    Checkerboard Mesa: 1

    Crazy Quilt Mesa: 1

    Deer Trap Mountain: 1

    East Rim Trail: 1

    Mt. Kinesava: 1

    Mt. of the Sun: 1

The list is not comprehensive. There have been many more deaths than listed above. The list above includes trail-less areas such as Cathedral Mountain or Mt. Kinesava, but eliminates other deaths on other routes. For example, most unfortunately, a canyoneer was killed in Heaps Canyon a couple years ago. The worse hiking disaster in Zion National Park was when five hikers were killed by a flash flood in the Zion Narrows. There is also the Kolob Creek disaster, but I guess that one was technically on the border. These are just a few of the deaths not listed above. Unfortunately, there are more.

Um, kinda sorta. They have SEVEN at Emerald Pools - one of those is probably Keith/Heaps. Many, MANY more on Angels Landing! There was one in lower Pine Creek two years ago that did not get much publicity, etc. etc. Yeah, not comprehensive, but gives you an idea of the wide range of misadventures available.

Trivia Question: How much concrete will it take when they fill in Zion and make it a parking lot for Kolob Res. and Zion Ponderosa?

What's the over/under on the closure date for Angel's Landing? I say Sept. 1, 2010 and take the under.

Brew and all you others - DON'T GIVE THEM IDEAS! You know they'd close it if they could - heck, sometimes it seems like... oops, there I go almost saying something stupid. Tom

Angels Landing Hike?! It sucks. Way over-rated! So was Lady Mountain, and now look what happened there!

Rumor has it that witnesses said the fall was a jump and looked like a suicide.

A body of mine floated Virgin on the same day, they put in a mile below where you guys found the second body. Funny the rangers didn't tell the only kayakers on the river to look for dead bodies....

Alex, the first boy was found sometime around 9 AM. There was a team with kayaks already up at Chamberlain Ranch waiting to launch to sweep the Narrows. When I arrived I went up to the end of Riverside Walk and then did a sweep down river from the first victim to the Temple of Sinawava. Simultaneously the decision was made to halt the Kayakers from launching at Chamberlain. Another crew swept the river from Temple of Sinawava on down. The second victim was located fairly soon after. When we were coming back down canyon we noticed several kayakers that were scouting Satans Staircase for a "Fun-Run". By that time the operation had been completed. I do know that several local "volunteer" whitewater specialists had been called and deployed.

PS: Have an awesome Yampa trip! I am really looking forward to a relaxing 5 days on the S.J.!

Those two kayakers I bet were Erik and his buddy. Small world.

We agree again. Everything at Zion is way overrated.
