small first aid kit
camera/film stuff
cleaning rag
gloves
bogley cards
personals, like keys, phone, wallet

I ride with pretty much the same and it depends on the ride but I usually have.
Spare tube, or two
pack kit
pump
chapstick
first aid kit
emergency blanket
whistle
GUN
powerbar
GU
tire sleeves for a ripped sidewall
spare screw for clipless pedals.
master quick link
multi tool / allen wrenches etc.
Nothing too heavy and pretty much the essentials, of course it depends on the ride and the forecasted weather but this is the basics.
Two wheels are better than four, keep the rubber side down.

GUN? Are you serious? (remind me to avoid group rides with you!! yikes!)
Stuff seems pretty standard. I do carry I.D and insurance info, and now always a small first aid kit and bandanna (after a bad crash with some bad gashes and no first aid). Two roads diverged in a wood, and I - I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. ~ Frost

I'm pretty minimalist. For Wasatch Front riding I use my lower profile Camelbak with:
2 Allen wrenches
2 zip ties
1 Genuine Innovations Micro Inflator
2 CO2 cartridges
1 rear derailleur hanger
2 patches with 1 tube of super glue
A few bandages and alcohol wipes in a baggie
A couple of GU packs or similar
Sometimes I'll carry my pocket saw or hand pruners or limb saw (but only one of these at a time) if I know of spots on my trail adoptions that need some TLC.
If I'm riding Moab or St. George I'll usually pack a few more items. Are we there yet?

Spare tube
alien multi tool
spoke wrench
allen keys
power bars
a few bandaids
zip ties
a small strap
metal tire levers
misc bolts for my frame
pump
tire patch kit
chain breaker tool
pedal wrench
lighter
gun
The gun thing is usually just for when I ride alone. Although it was bought specifically to be carried in my camelbak.
The funny thing is that I carry nothing in my vehicals. Maybe I am just relying on Onstar if there is ever an emergency.

I don't think carrying a gun is a bad thing. But then I am use to hiking with my Dad and he carries his handgun hiking or riding horse. He told me in case he comes across a pissed off badger. Granted my Dad is an odd one but very loveable.
Only thing I would be worried about is crashing with that thing in your pack, but I guess if the safety is on.
After coming across a moose on the trail at Snowbasin two years ago, I was very nervous finishing that ride, not by the moose he moved along, but we do have mtn lions. Maybe not at Snowbasin, but other places I ride I know they are there. I came to the conclusion if I must die mtn biking by being attacked by an animal then my number is up. However with my track record it is more likely to occur because I crashed.
Anyhoo
I carry most of what has been previously mentioned except bandaids. I do have a nice pocket knife I keep in my pack and I photo copied my drivers license and on the other side contact info should someone happen upon me and I am unconcious, one hairband, and gummy bears. If I am riding alone I take my SPOT.Chere'

Stuff in my bag
This is my stuff:
*small first aid kit
*spare tube and tube sticks
*tool
*i-pod
*phone
*pump
*patch kit
*H2O
Have been thinking about a knife lately. When out late and it's getting dark, hate run into a hungry cat or a hungry something without something to defend myself with. GUN would be good, but don't think I will go that route at this time.GO!

Far more people die in falls than from animal attacks. It's the #1 killer in the backcountry followed by drowning, exposure, lightning, and heart attacks. I don't recall where exactly animal attacks were ranked but it's somewhere around #12 or #15.
Always in the seat bag for the basic rides:
Spare tube
Tire lever
Pump
Patch kit
Crank Bros Multi-17
Mylar tire boot
Chain link or pin
+ 22-32 oz. water in a bottle
For longer rides in familiar territory I put up to 70 oz. of water in a Camelbak Siren or Rogue and stuff the following in it:
~500 calories of snacks/bars
Leatherman multitool
Kleenex pocket pack
2 oz. bottle of Sunscreen
Basic first aid kit
Lighter
+ 25-44 oz. Gatorade in a bottle(s)
For the truly epic rides I put up to 100 oz. of water in the Camelbak Mule along with all of the above and:
Another 500-1000 calories
Small flashlight
Map and cue sheet
GPS with FRS
And a full blown survival kit containing:
Backup first aid kit
Backup micro-lighter
Backup micro-flashlight
Waterproof matches
Flint starter
Fresnel lens magnifier
Tinder
Whistle
Signal mirror
Compass
Duct tape
Spool of upholstery thread
10 ft. of nylon cord
3 ft. of steel wire
Sewing needles
2 sq. ft. aluminum foil
Emergency mylar blanket
Water purification tablets
Pencil and pad
Leatherman Squirt P4
and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things too
+ 44-64 oz. Gatorade in bottles
And yes, I've done one ride and a few hikes where we went through 164 fluid ounces in a day.seen all good people turn their heads each day so satisfied I'm on my way...

Shows you just how long the winter has been- I haven't looked in my pack for a while. I also carry tire levers and a chain master link.
Are we there yet?

I packed the gun because in my earlier days of riding it seemed like I would run into some bums and weirdos on the trail. As of the past few years it seems like all of the trails are more widely used and I have met some cool people.

THATS where that Park tool kit went
I have to actually GO THRU my camelbak every once in a while just to make sure nothin's a growing in there...
-100oz. bladder
-pump
-first aid kit
-a ziplock baggie with toilet paper. Just try and use your sock ONCE and you'll thank me for remembering the important papers.
-emergency blanket
-handwarmer pak - hey, it wyoming
-a various assortment of powerbars, sportbeans & such
-park tool kit - I had two extra Keith -
-spare tube
-extra base layer - usually a shortsleeve undergear style compression T - super light and compact
-lube
....this stuff never leaves my camelbak.
Every 'spring' I disassemble the pak and hose it down - the sweat buildup....wow. can get a bit phunky.
