Driver News: Jake Thompson - SKUSA SuperNationals XIII Preview

For the first time since 2004, Canadian Jake Thompson will make the trip south to Vegas for the prestigious SKUSA SuperNationals where he will be racing in the Stock Moto class for the Overdrive/PCR team. This season Thompson competed in the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup, where he collected two wins, 3 podiums, and finished 5th overall in the final standings. Unfortunately, his affection for dirt, grass, tire walls, and basically all things not asphalt cut short his championship dreams.

Having raced cars all year, Thompson arrives in Vegas overweight, and out of shape, and to be honest merely finishing will be seen as a success. That said, he can look back on a string of impressive past performances as motivation.

2000 SuperNationals (80cc Jr): Top driver from Calgary, AB in 80jr. Intelligently faked an incident to avoid the indignity of being lapped by Alex Speed in the Final.

2001 SuperNationals (80cc Sr): Won a heat race. The heat was conducted at night resulting in the 5 drivers running in front of him spinning off when they couldn’t see gravel strewn across the track. After inheriting the lead, SKUSA officials assumed he was a lapped car, and actually waved the checked flag for the 2nd place driver, requiring Thompson to do an extra lap. A protest was required to reinstate the win, as all officials were dumbfounded by the possibility of him winning. Unfortunately, the kart was much slower during daylight, and he probably finished mid pack in the final, although no one really remembers.

2002 SuperNationals (S1): Finished 6th in S1, and was temporarily promoted to the podium as dq’s were handed out, then appealed, then overturned. Gained notoriety for having a jack-in-the-box figurine zap strapped to his front bumper.

2003 SuperNationals (SuperPro): Unofficially voted best looking driver. Finished 4th in Superpro... of the Italian Motors Drivers. Top 10 in first practice before the rubber went down.

2004 SuperNationals (Superpro): Unofficially voted best looking driver for the 2nd consecutive year. Highlight was crashing with Patrick Long in the prefinal, because Pat is really freaking awesome and he was ecstatic to be racing anywhere near him.

Clearly it will be tough to top his past performances, but Thompson is feeling confident. “I think our chances are great this year, I actually heard Schumi was originally signed up for S3 until he found out I was racing, necessitating his move to Super Pro to have any chance at winning”.
