If you work at it, most canyons draining into Lake Powell have an overland route. Interestingly, the only two named canyon systems drainging into Powell that I don't know of a viable overland route (not to say that there isn't one if you look for it) are the Face and Labyrinth canyons. All the others, I know of overland routes to get into. Some canyon systems are just as easy to reach overland as by boat, though some are more difficult.

Accessing from the lake is normally so much easier and safer on so many different levels....

This is the head of Face canyon proper (main canyon) where the lake enters the slot. This was Jul 2009. The time to have been here was 2008 and earlier when the water level was 30-50 feet lower. I have seen pics of it from that time, an awesome colorful slot with the lake water in the bottom. We attempted it once but the boat met with tumble weeds and driftwood. We should have persevered. But caution must be taken with tumble weeds clogging the cooling system on boat motors.

I don't have an A on my map.

And I'm still trying to figure out how to use this embeded map option.... which is why I posted the actual canyon cordinates under the canyon title.

I was originally seeing the long skinny canyon but then when I zoomed out on your map there was an A on the other side of the channel?

I see it now.... that is where google thinks the canyon is located.... which I will assume is where the natural channel of Oak meets the natural channel of the Colorado. Originally I typed Oak Canyon into google maps and it took me to the A. Than I panned and zoomed to the picture I wanted.... As I said, google maps is kinda new to me. The biggest reason I posted that satellite image was because I wanted to test out the new insertable map feature.

I just went back to the first of this thread and was scanning down. When you come to the pictures I posted from my trip it has taken all the pictures and combined them together. Is this something the new program does? Seems cool. I've got a question, when when making a post all of the little characters, whatever they are called, the smiley faces etc. are gone?

Beech and acca are in charge of the nuts and bolts of running this place.

But... with regard to your older pictures... looks like it has something to do with the importing from the older format.

As for the emoticons (smiley faces).... click the button "Go Advanced" at the bottom of your reply and you get them back, along with a bunch of other options. The new system comes with "Quick Reply" which is simple and what you have been using.... "Go Advance" has a bunch of options like inserting maps and stuff. The new system has a WYSIWYG editor (What You See Is What You Get).

Pretty much sums it up. Man I was crazy for canyons for those few years. Don't regret it a bit. Saw some of the most dramatic scenery imaginable in canyons. And the technical stuff was fun. And met a lot of other canyon fans, like Mr. Iceaxe. Good times. Ok, I have one regret: not doing Heaps, I'll get around to it one of these years.

I still dig canyons, but the time and logistics got old (especially with my wife). Cycling is my new craze. I can ride from my house (mountain or road bike), or at lunch from work. Easier to fit in some fun with the hectic family schedule. This year I plan to hit a few canyons, probably with the kids.

I'm digging all the photos.

Very true! Mtnbiking can be done in a few hours and you can have a awesome trip. Canyoneering usually involves multiple-days, which makes the logisitics a pain sometimes. But then again, if you are dedicated, the outcome is worth it (obviously).

I've had a few friends shy away from canyoneering and when they do, they have ALWAYS gone with biking.

OK... so the ZAC guiding lake Powell thread got me to looking at slots....

and after reading the ZAC website here is what I noticed.... the routes are on Navajo land, They access from the lake, and they have an option to paddle a kayak.... so using that I figured the slots they guide are up Navajo, Labyrinth, or Face canyon... all of which have some amazing slots draining into them.
