Funny you should mention a hiking camera, since I am looking in the direction of the Fujifilm S200EXR FinePix. I'm definitely tired of hauling SLRs and lenses down the trail. Use to love my Minolta seven years ago, but it's had it. Here's the Fuji...

I ma with Richard, I got real tired of full size SLR weighing me down.
Great pics, when I had it with me. Then more and more it got left behind
as the adventures got tougher.

That Panasonic looks a LOT like my Minolta A2. Its been a great camera.
Really like the size vs quality.

If I were to get another it might be an Optio W80. Weather proof, shockproof and cold proof. Its a simple point and shoot but would fit nicely in my pocket.

I've been planning to get a DSLR for a long time, and the 7D came out at the perfect time so I snagged one.

The HD video mode is pretty nuts. The HD performance in low light is what sold me on the camera, plus it's weather sealed like the 1D series (which the 5D's are not)

8fps has been awesome for shooting kids.

I don't think I'll take this in any extreme canyons, but I'm planning to bring it through Behunin later on this month - I'll post pics when I get back. maybe I'll shoot some video with it too...

If anyone has any long-ass EF lenses (like the 100-400L :) ) and a pack mule... I bet you could get some amazing action video with those lenses of people rapping down stuff. I'll let you come along and play with my body... (Err... my camera body that is... )

kind of weather sealed. they are, however, not fully weather sealed like the 1 series.

i took a 7d through smiling cricket a couple weeks ago, it was a champion.

7fps: I was at Delicate Arch last week and was amazed to hear people with top DSLRs squeezing off 20 frames at 7fps or higher of the arch. No, really. Like it was scoring a touchdown or something. I'll bet it would be fun to look at that folder of photos on the computer the next day.

Well, they could have been exposure bracketing... but they probably weren't if they didn't have a tripod.

For landscape people, high frame rate is not really necessary or desired. However, with a 1 year old and 3 year old, it's absolutely worth its weight in gold trying to get a good pic of them. Just hold down the shutter button and then start trying to coax them - then delete the crappy ones from the lot and in about 30 seconds time you can get shots that would normally take 30 minutes of trying to coax the little buggers to cooperate.

And it's 8 fps on the 7d Don't shortchange the body by 1 fps! (It is 7 fps if you have it on "silent mode" but 8 fps if you are in normal mode)

Yes. It's APS-C (1.6 crop factor). So... if you are only interested in landscape and have no interest in action, the 5d is a better body...

If you are primarily interested in action only, the 1dIV is obviously geared towards you... the 7d for me fits in the happy medium between the 5d and 1d - and fortunately doesn't fit between the two in price point! :)

I'm sure you'll be very happy with the 7D. I am very happy with the 5D MII after a year of use. Good reviews. My favorite part is the tripod eating seals.
