This snake was in Utah. After you guys said King I did some research and found the California Mountain King, but it's not known in Southern Ut.
Looks to be the Arizona Mountain King. The head is an exact match to the AZ.

That is really nice, haven't seen one of those. We have the black and white kings in the area.

I think this is a ground snake, found in our yard:

Quoting my best friend, Bob McNally, after a bad boating trip: "Nature scares me!"

Same kind of snake that we saw in Das Boot several weekends ago. Arizona King eh? Those critters sure get around!

There are several mnemonic rhymes that help you distinguish a king/milk snake from the poisonous coral snake.

    • If red touches black, it's OK, Jack. If red touches yellow, you're a dead fellow
Red and yellow, kill a fellow. Red and black, friend of Jack
If yellow follows red, you're dead
Red to yellow, kill a fellow. Red to black, venom lack
Red on yellow, dangerous fellow. Red on black, friend to Jack
Black and red, you're not dead; Red and yellow, one dead fellow

Darn it trackrunner, you beat me to it.

We used to have king snakes and coral snakes when I was a kid growing up in Texas. I remember the saying:

Red touches black, friend of Jack

Red touches yellow, kill a fellow

    Or something like that.

    My dad taught me...

    Red touches Black...Venom Lack
    Red touches Yellow...Kill a Fellow
