CREEP ALERT
So last night, I decided to go to the Vapor Caves and soak away my week. The vapor caves kind of attract a variety of people. For the most part it's a dark, very wet, very stinky cave (from the minerals) that has several different rooms with slab benches to sit and sweat your ass off. So I walked into this one room by myself and I copped a squat, ready to relax. Within a few minutes, in walks a HUGE man and he sits on the bench across from me. I immediately got a not-so-good vibe and my creep radar went off. The caves are meant to be a quiet place for meditation and detoxification. But this man proceeded to talk to me, asking me all kinds of questions- thankfully nothing too personal and I answered him with very short answers, because I was highly annoyed. He started rambling about his new apt. he just rented and where it's at (which it's a dive b/c I know where it's at) and he started talking about how he pumps iron all the time and he's lost 35 lbs, how he likes to work out and is looking for a job in construction etc...... I'd say he weighed at least 280. He had a small tattoo on his upper arm so of course he had to ask about my tattoos. Then he introduced himself as Robert Blackmon and he shook my hand and this creeped me out to even touch his hand. By that point, my creep radar was going off the richter scale and I became nauseous and decide I needed to exit the caves and get ready for my spa treatment.
So today on a whim, something told me to look up our local sex offenders.......guess who I found on the site?
I am still so weirded out and feel so icky now.

That's terrible. These people should be locked up for life.

Yea just the fact that I exchanged conversation and shook hands with a registered sex offender makes me violently ill.

Ugh!!! The good thing about this story is your "creep detector" seems to be functioning properly though.
Side note, the company I was working at last week has an RFID device with a gps. About the size of a pea and designed to be implanted inside the body. I have one inside my body right now as a matter fact. They had me swallow one when they found out I would be flying. I looked it up when I got home and it kept perfect track of the 1600 miles I traveled yesterday. It even knows what side of the house I'm in right now. Anyways, the thinking is that you can be alerted via text when a sex offender, criminal, or even a democrat gets within 30 feet of you. But the first application is that they won't be allowed within a certain distance of schools and stuff like that. Really cool and should be on the market next year.Your safety is not my responsibility.

I wonder what is crime was. I just says felony conviction and no photo. You may want to call the number on the website and see if he has registered. Seems like his address on the site doesn't match the one he told you. That may be enough to bust him. I tell my daughter to trust that feeling or creep meter. It is generally right.

Is there any type of security or monitoring of the area? This guy should NOT be allowed in a place like this, even if it is public. Good thing you've got such strong radar!
Never regret anything that made you smile!

"Today the Vapor Caves consist of three adjoining underground rock chambers. Visitors descend a stairway inside the main building and pass through a stone corridor into the caves. An atmosphere of well-being pervades throughout the soothing stillness of the caves. Relax on slab marble benches in the rocky alcoves, and inhale the natural steam vapor in the warm, dimly-lit cave chambers. Stress and tension melt away effortlessly"
Based on the above description, I would ask for your money back due to non delivery of advertised atmosphere and relaxation.

That's pretty messed up on multiple levels. Creepy just begins to accurately describe it.

Glad you made it out ok, a lot of women don't. Be prepared, either come packing or learn how to destroy nuts with one kick
Being defenseless victim is what they prey on.

Yes guys, there was a moment in my head where I had flashing letters that said "DONT TALK TO HIM". I think it was part of my radar going off. And I am pissed that I shook his hand. Luckily the caves were relatively full with other people so I felt safe that way.
I do wish our registry would list out offenses as well. It's pretty brief and on the first page, it does say that not everyone is listed. I personally think it's laziness on the states part to keep this list properly updated. I check it frequently as a parent to just know who is in our neighborhood etc.....(luckily no one is near us). I guess the sucky part about this is just because a person is a registered sex offender with a felony charge doesn't mean they can't participate in being in public places. Now he may be banned from being near a school? Or working with kids? Or whatever, dependent on his charge. But going into a vapor cave he is allowed. And another unfortunate reality is that the vapor caves can't ask every person that descends into the caves whether or not they are a registered sex offender.
Thinking I will check into a self defense class as Alex mentioned. It's a great idea for many different reasons.

There are some institutions that are doing something about it though. As a pharmaceutical salesman, I go into a lot of hospitals. One of them, Children's Hospital in Seattle recently started checking the ID's of EVERY person that enters their facility. This includes parents, vendors, delivery people, etc. Since implementing this policy, they have encountered 4 registered sex offenders in two weeks. 4!!!! 1 of them was allowed, with a family escort, to visit the patient. The other 3 were escorted to the door by security.
How scary is that!?!? Think of the vulnerability of these poor children; laying in a hospital bed and have some "visitor" prey on them. Sick. I'm glad they are doing it. I recommended to Intermountain's Risk Management that a similar policy be put in place at Primary Children's.

ABirken, you should call the law enforcement agency who has jurisdiction over these 'vapor caves' and let them know the guy is hanging out there. They might like to check up on him and/or pay him a visit.
Glad you got out of there unscathed. If you go back, I'm sure you'll ensure you take a friend or two... or three...or four.

Oh my God, Alison!
Thank god you weren't assaulted by him or something. That is so many levels of creepy and wrong. I think it's a good idea to say something to the local cops, just in case. I mean, he wasn't doing anything illegal by being in a public place, but his unwelcome conversation was still on the edge of harrassment. At least the cops can know he goes there.
And let's hear it for a woman's intuition and creep radar detector ! I've dealt with a few in my lifetime (mostly ex's or failed suitor attempts), and some of them did the stalker thing. One guy (ex-roommate) physically threatened me and I almost had to get an order of protection filed against him.
Stay safe, girlfriend!
