Ice Fishing - Auger Info
Is there such thing as auger rentals?
I'm going Ice Fishing next weekend ans I don't have one. Not much use for one down here.
Can i use my small chainsaw to make a hole or will it scare away all the fish?

You can use a chainsaw. We do that at Bear Lake to fish for cisco. But there is a hole size limit unless netting cisco. 12" I think. So I think you would have kind of a hard time.

don't use augers much in alaska. most use an ice chisel. a little slower than an auger but no gas required. and if the ice is thicker than the bar is long on your chinsaw you are out of luck. if you are handy with a welder it's a breeze to make one too. its nice to make it 2 piece. easier to pack.

The DWR in SLC used to loan out (free) ice fishing gear to anyone--including augers and poles. I know they were doing this as recently as about 4 years ago before I bought my own auger. You might check there,

mine wasn't that heavy. but then again i either had it on my dogsled or snowmachine. maybe 6 or 8 pounds. however much a 5 foot piece of metal pipe weighs. i wouldn't be using it for backpacking. and we were cutting fresh holes in ice a couple of feet thick, hole the size of a basket ball.
