    Gravel Conditions 7/27/08

Monticello Dan and I took a little trip down to Cedar Mesa over the weekend. We arrived at the Soldier's Grave at around 4:30pm, and it was raining cats and dogs up near Natural Bridges. We decided to ditch our plans to do Fry Canyon, and await the impending flash flood. We dinked around driving ATVs up and down the bottom of White Canyon, waiting, waiting, waiting.....

Finally at around 7:00pm the dam broke, and a pretty good gullywasher came breaking through. It flowed pretty good for over 24 hours. I have time lapsed images of the flash flood at three different angles, and I'm gonna see if I can get Sombeech (or anyone else who knows how) to splice them together.

Sunday we busted on over and knocked out Gravel Canyon - currently my favorite in the Cedar Mesa area. There was a fair amount of water in the canyon, and the water was clean and clear throughout most of it. There were pretty deep pools just below both of the prominent rappels, so in lieu of breaking out the ropes and harnesses, we just downclimbed and jumped into the pools. We lunched at a very peaceful little subway-like alcove at the confluence of Cowboy and Gravel canyons.

Man that hike back to the car SUCKS!!

Yes. We spent a good hour or so exploring the ruins. Unfortunately no photos. I didn't want to risk breaking my "good" camera, so I left it at camp. I really need a small durable waterproof point n' shoot for stuff like this. If anyone has a good camera that fits that description that is just collecting dust let me know...let's make a deal.

Oh yeah and -- the gnats and no-see-ums were HORRIBLE!!! Go prepared with a bunch of DEET!
