Help with trip to Peru

I have been thinking about going to Peru for some time now, and I think the time is coming close.

I would like to spend a few days in Cuzco, and go to Machu Picchu, spend a few days on the Inca Trail, ect....

Anybody have some info?

Also, I have a friend whose bro-in-law is from Nepal.
He takes people to base camp.
Maybe I should go there.

My wife is from Peru.

Too bad she was a total city girl or she might have some decent advice to add.

If I were going, I'd make sure to visit the lines of Nazca (you know, the giant hummingbird and spider, etc) and maybe get some Amazon fishing in.

I have not been to Peru (I was supposed to go but blew off the trip of a life time to marry the woman of my dreams). My friends who have been to Machupicchu have said it was awesome but complained about the crowds. I would still love to go though.

This above is the tour company/tour we are doing in October '09. I know there are so many other spectacular things to see and do in Peru but I am going to be with my dad and oldest son on limited time. I thought doing a tour would be a great way to go for the first time. I do know two things that are important to know:
Machu Picchu is now a permitted hike, so get your permits or have your tour company do it for you. If you do use a tour company that uses porters to haul your goods, make sure the porters are treated right (tip them too). Also to see Machu Picchu, you don't have to hike in the 21 miles........you can be lazy and take the train.

I've heard that same thing. I've also heard there are several other spectacular ruins spread allover the Andes mountains that are comparable to Machu Picchu. But for whatever reason, there is this little voice in my head that keeps saying "if I go to Peru, go see Machu Picchu". I guess everyone else has that little voice too!!!! Good news is that it's now a permitted hike so at least the Inca Trail isn't overly crowded.

And hey! Marrying the love of your life is wayyyyyyyy better than visiting an international destination. Right?

make sure you have plenty of cash with you before you leave Cuzco on your way to machu picchu, there are no ATM's in Aqua Cientes...lol

be sure to dink lots of coca tea once you get to Cuzco, helps with the altitude.
especially if arriving from Lima.
Do try the Cui
Do try the alpaca, they both are tasty
and definately drink plenty of pisco sours
