Missing hiker is found safe
July 13th, 2008 @ 4:40pm
(KSL News) An Ohio man who was missing in the High Uintas for two days is safe tonight.
John "Giz" Youngerman, 61, was reported missing Friday night. Crews had been combing the Kings Peak area for him since then. They spotted him hiking in the area around 10:30 this morning.
Youngerman was fatigued, mildly dehydrated and glad to be off the mountain, but otherwise is in good condition. He will be reunited with his family this evening in Park City.
According to the Summit County Sheriff's Department, Youngerman was hiking with a group of local hikers he met near the Henry's Fork Trailhead on Friday. The group reached Kings Peak around noon Friday then returned to camp. When Youngerman didn't arrive, some of the group backtracked looking for him while others drove out to report him overdue.
Crews searched the area on Saturday on the ground and from the air. Sunday additional searchers headed into the area, as did search dog teams.
Kings Peak is the highest point in Utah, located about 79 miles east of Salt Lake and 45 miles north of Duchesne in the High Uinta mountains. The sheriff's department says Friday night the temperature dropped to approximately 30 degrees at the trailhead.
